Dental Hygienist Training Program
Most dental hygienist programs last for two years. They are usually offered at community colleges. The program will go into detail about what is involved in being a dental hygienist.
There are things that are learned in the program that you might not think about. You will find out how to properly brush the teeth with all of the tools in the office. Fluoride treatments will be discussed. However, there is information that you can take from the program that will benefit your patients so that they will have a healthy mouth. One of the things that you may have learned during childhood was that all candy is bad for the teeth. When you start the dental program, you will learn that not all candy is bad. The candies that are sticky should be avoided. These include caramel and taffy. The candy will stick to the teeth, and this will make it harder to brush the substance off the surface of the teeth. When the candy sits there, it creates cavities. They will also damage the enamel of the teeth. Raisins are another food that will stick to the teeth. If your patients need something sweet, then recommend chocolate or something that can easily be rinsed or brushed away.
Another important aspect of dental hygienist school is flossing. This is almost as important as brushing, if not more important in some situations. When your patients floss the right way, they will decrease the chance of cavities forming between the teeth. You need to learn how to floss properly so that you can teach those you work on how to hold the material and how to get to the back teeth. When you are in school, you will be taught about the deeper components of flossing and why it is so important to the teeth and mouth. If people don’t floss, it could lead to gum diseases that could cause the teeth to fall out. Heart disease is also related to not flossing properly as the bacteria sits between the teeth, getting into the gums and the bloodstream.
Some dental offices will let the hygienist do whitening treatments. While you are in school, you will learn about all of the methods that offices use. These range from laser treatments to trays that are placed in the mouth. Another concept that you will learn is that yellow teeth aren’t as bad as you might think. Some people who have yellow teeth have stronger teeth than those who have whiter ones simply because some of the chemicals used in whitening can deteriorate the enamel. Some foods will lighten the teeth instead of chemicals, such as apples.
Other techniques that are learned are specialized in nature. They include learning how to cure a filling or sealant, learning how to administer injections in the mouth to numb the gums and how to rinse the mouth while the dentist is performing procedures on the patient, such as crowns or root canals. There are several things learned in a short period of time, but the details will be discussed clearly so that you will be comfortable in the career.
